Washington, D.C. – This week's ruling by a federal judge on masking and the TSA’s announcement that it would no longer enforce the CDC mask mandate on public transportation marks a significant shift after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Action is needed to further economic recovery for our devastated travel industry. It is past time for the Biden administration to look beyond masks and do away with the crippling requirement that Americans abroad and people wishing to travel to the United States test negative for COVID-19 prior to boarding an airplane.

This policy creates an undue burden for Americans fearful of being stranded abroad and serves as a major deterrent to international travel for no clear public health benefit. Other countries in Europe and beyond have lifted testing requirements recognizing that they are ineffective at preventing the spread of COVID-19, contribute to plummeting international travel rates as compared to 2019 and put an undue burden on travelers.

It is time for the Biden administration to lift the testing requirement or at least explain what metrics must be met to do so.
